About American Councils Tajikistan

Connecting Tajikistan and the World Through Education and Exchange

American Councils for International Education has been working in Tajikistan since 1994, building lasting connections between people and institutions in Tajikistan, the United States, and beyond. From our office in Dushanbe, we implement educational exchange, language learning, professional development, and alumni programs that reach students, educators, professionals, and emerging leaders across the country.

American Councils has a substantial reach throughout Tajikistan—a country where opportunities for international exchange can be limited. When a Tajik professional brings international experience to their workplace, an English teacher applies modern teaching methodologies, or a scholar working on Central Asia speaks Tajik, there is a good chance they are part of the American Councils community.

Today, our Tajikistan office has 15 staff members, 8 active programs, and a community of more than 2,500 alumni. Our team works with partners across the country to create opportunities for learning, leadership, professional growth, and meaningful international connections.

Our Work in Tajikistan

American Councils Tajikistan implements a diverse portfolio of programs, including FLEX Tajikistan, the FLEX Alumni Program, C5+O.N.E. (Opening Networks through English), the Critical Language Scholarship Program, and the Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP). In partnership with the U.S. Embassy, we also administer Public Diplomacy Section initiatives, including University English Resource Centers (ERCs) and the U.S. Alumni Network in Tajikistan (USANT).

Our office also has a strong history of supporting language education and international learning. Through our language programs, students and professionals have studied Tajik, Persian (Farsi), Afghan Dari, and Pashto, creating opportunities for deeper linguistic and cultural understanding. During the summer, American students and seasonal program staff become part of the vibrant Dushanbe community through intensive language and cultural programming.

The Dushanbe office also supports access to higher education opportunities in the United States through EducationUSA advising, helping Tajik students understand the U.S. higher education system and navigate the process of applying to American colleges and universities.

A Legacy of Opportunity

Over more than three decades, American Councils Tajikistan has implemented and supported a wide range of programs, including EducationUSA, TSSET, CPC, Discover America, USCAEF, TEA, Summer Camp America, Study With US, Open World, Community Connections, Muskie, UGRAD, JFDP, and many others.

These programs have helped generations of Tajik students, educators, professionals, and community leaders develop new skills, pursue educational opportunities, build international networks, and contribute to their communities.
